All this holds true for everyone, especially in the arts, "where one never really knows if they have any talent." Robt. Wyatt. A parent can kill the desire in a child by criticizing them or never encouraging them. It takes a certain type of stubbornness and self-belief to go on pursuing one's vision and overcoming the negativity that surrounds them.

Very insightful and true.

It also takes a certain kind of courage to break out of the narcissism to buck the system and persevere, despite a critical parent and/or set of failures.

In my case, I don't think it was courage as much as desire and determination to do what I wanted to do. Or maybe just plain stubbornness.

I had an employer who used to say, the pioneers are the first ones to get shot with arrows. I experienced some of that but perseverance paid off.
